Limited edition - Worshipful Company of Makers of Playing Cards.
Master : Nick Prentice
The cards commemorate the 250th anniversary of the first landing on the island of South Georgia by Captain James Cook on 17th January 1775.
The blue and yellow twin set has card backs featuring the Company crest, with the crest from the flag of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands being prominent. Both sets have illustrated court cards, 4s and 2s, the wildlife depicting the abundant species of birds and marine mammals breeding on South Georgia, including the worlds most southerly songbird, South Georgia Pipit. The court cards are framed by designs of flora native to South Georgia: Tussock Grass, Shield Fern, Greater Burnet and Tufted Fescue.
The Cultural pack depicts the explorers, scientists, and famous residents of South Georgia over the past 250 years, as well as several of it's well-known landmarks and buildings.
The court cards are framed with ship's rope, rusty chains, whaling tools and rivets used in the construction of the whaling stations.
All the other pip cards show a map of South Georgia in the form of a watermark. the wildlife jokers are rats and mice, inadvertently brought to the island by commercial sealers and whalers, illustrated as the Cultural set jokers.
